Stillbirth can be diagnosed by ultrasound examination to show that the baby's heart is no longer beating. After delivery, the baby is found to be stillborn if there are no signs of life such as breathing, heartbeat, and movements.

Birth Certificates are not issued for a stillbirth.

If your baby was stillborn after 24 weeks of completed pregnancy you need to register your baby's birth within 6 weeks. You do not have to register a name for your baby, but you cannot add a name later or change the name you have given.

Data about stillbirth are collected across the country on fetal death reports. Healthcare providers complete fetal death reports for fetuses who do not survive pregnancy, and then submit the reports to their state vital records office.

A Certificate of Stillbirth is a document issued by the State Vital Records Office only. It may be issued at the request of a parent of a stillborn fetus that reached at least twenty weeks gestation and died before birth. It is a commemorative document acknowledging the stillbirth.

All births and deaths must be registered. This includes live births, stillbirths, and fetal deaths. There are different regulations for reporting these occurrences, depending on the circumstances. Fetal death certificates have been maintained in the California Department of Public Health Vital Records since July 1, 1905. INSTRUCTIONS: 1. As of January 1, 2008, ONLY a parent (mother and/or father) can obtain a Certificate of Still Birth.

Those terms are: stillborn, intrauterine death, fetal/fetal demise, fetal/fetal mortality, fetal/fetal death, dead-born and fetal/fetal loss. Other less specific terms are sometimes used as well: intrapartum death, antepartum death, perinatal audit, perinatal death, perinatal mortality, pregnancy loss.
