Direct PLUS and Direct Subsidized / Unsubsidized loans have different MPNs. An MPN can also be good for up to 10 years if certain enrollment requirements are met.

All borrowers need to complete an MPN before they can receive a federal student loan. Some circumstances may require you to sign an MPN more than once: If you're receiving a type of loan for which you haven't signed an MPN previously. If your school requires you to sign a new MPN each academic year.

A Master Promissory Note (MPN) is an agreement between you and the government to repay your debt. You agree to only use loan funds for authorized academic expenses when you sign an MPN. If you fail to meet the conditions of your MPN, you could end up defaulting on your loan.

By signing an MPN, the borrower is agreeing to repay all loans made under the MPN. MPNs are not school-specific and may be used across schools. For example, if a student transfers from school A to school B, the previously completed MPN may be used to borrow loans while attending school B.

GLOSSARY. An MPN is a legal document that contains the Borrower's Rights and Responsibilities and Terms and Conditions for repayment. Direct PLUS and Direct Subsidized / Unsubsidized loans have different MPNs.

In most cases, the parent will be required to complete the MPN only once during their student's years in college. If the parent borrower is ineligible because of an adverse credit history, the parent may obtain an endorser for the loan.

You can check your MPN completion history by logging in to StudentAid.gov using your FSA ID and clicking your name in the top right corner. Then click “My Documents” and select the “Filter By” “MPN” in the “Completed Documents” dropdown menu to make sure you've completed your MPN for your federal student loans.

The revised versions of the Direct Subsidized/Unsubsidized Loan MPN and Direct PLUS Loan MPN now have the same OMB Control Number, 1845-0007, and the new expiration date for both MPNs is 7/31/2022.
