Wetland determination (sometimes called identification) is simply the determination of whether an area is a wetland or not. Wetland delineation is the actual determination and establishment of wetland boundaries. Delineations are based on the definition of wetland in the Clean Water Act.

It is often divided into two parts - the Outer Coastal Plain and the Inner Coastal Plain. The Outer Coastal Plain is made up of the Outer Banks and the Tidewater region.

The Gulf Coastal Plain is an area of relatively gently sloping terrain extending across the southern portion of the United States from Texas to Georgia. It was covered by the waters of the Gulf of Mexico until about 50 million years ago.

Stretching from Cape Cod south through Florida and west to the Texas Gulf Coast, the Coastal Plain includes such prominent features as the Chesapeake Bay, long chains of Atlantic and Gulf barrier islands, and the lower Mississippi River with its fragile delta.

It is dissected by streams and rivers flowing into the Gulf of Mexico. Here you can find: barrier islands along the coast; salt grass marshes surrounding its bays and estuaries; a few remaining patches of tallgrass prairies; oak mottes scattered along the coast; and tall woodlands in the river bottomlands.

The Gulf Coastal Plain is a westward extension of the Atlantic Coastal Plain around the Gulf of Mexico. It is only the lower, seaward part of this region that deserves the name of plain, for there alone is the surface unbroken by hills or valleys.
