Get IL DSD CDL 14 2013-2024

The new CDL law was implemented February 7, 2022 and requires drivers to complete Entry-Level Drive Training (ELDT) from a training provider listed on FMCSA's Training Provider Registry (TPR) before being scheduled for a skills test.

The Illinois CDL test consists of 50 questions. To pass, you must correctly answer at least 40 questions (80%).

CDL knowledge tests include: General Knowledge, Passenger Transport, Air Brakes, Combination Vehicles, Hazardous Materials, Tanker Vehicles, Doubles/Triples, School Bus, Firefighter. Depending on what class of license (A, B or C) and endorsements you need, you must take one or more knowledge tests.

You need a Class C CDL. (Farmers are given an exemption of up to 502 gal.) A driver must be properly licensed to operate the size of the vehicle he/she is driving. Farmer exemptions from the CDL do exist; however, they must still have the correct classification of license in order to operate certain vehicles.

Class B — Single vehicle with a GVWR* of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing another not in excess of 10,000 pounds. Class C — Single vehicle with a GVWR* of at least 16,001 pounds but less than 26,001 pounds. Class D — Single vehicle with a GVWR* of less than 16,001 pounds.

Class C — Any motor vehicle with a GVWR of more than 16,000 pounds, but less than 26,001 pounds or any such vehicle towing another not in excess of 10,000 pounds. Also allows for operation of Class D vehicles.

A CDL is required to drive any type of vehicle used for commercial purposes, including buses, semi-trucks, dump trucks and tractor-trailers.

Illinois driver's licenses are classified by the GVWR of a vehicle (and any towed vehicles): Class A — Any combination of motor vehicles with a GCWR of 26,001 pounds or more, providing the GVWR of the vehicle being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds. Also allows for operation of Class B, C and D vehicles.
