Scientific observations can occur in a lab setting or the natural world. For example, watching an apple fall from a tree could be an observation. Noticing that fish only come to a particular part of the river in the early morning is also an observation. Smelling garbage decomposing is another example of observation.

The Field Training Program is a traditional, standardized evaluation program completed with on-the-job training validated by a Field Training Officer (FTO). The Police Training Program is a program based on a philosophy of adult learning that includes midterm evaluations and matrix performance outcomes.

First, you record your observations of a particular setting or situation--that is, take field notes. Next, you interpret those notes ing to relevant criteria. Finally, you write a well organized paper that presents your observations and interpretations, usually with the aim of answering a research question.

Daily Observation Report (DOR) - A daily report prepared by a Field Training Officer supervising a probationary patrol officer. This report evaluates his/her progress, identifies problems, and remedial efforts observed on a daily basis by a Field Training Officer.

Observation reports provide instructors with a summary of teaching practices observed by a teaching consultant during multiple class sessions and feedback to be used to improve teaching and learning.

The Daily Observation Report (DOR) and Narrative Evaluation are key components of the Field Training Program. In combination, these forms document the trainee's level of performance for each required category and clearly identify areas of competency, outstanding performance, or the need for remedial training.
