Your constructive speech needs to be well-constructed and persuasive. Your rebuttal needs to cover all of the opponent's critical points. The summary and the final focus need to effectively crystallize the round and zero-in on the most important points, such as to drive home your victory in the mind of the judge.

The debate itself is broken down into a series of speeches based on the speaking order selected during the coin toss. This makes Public Forum Debate unique among debate events in that the con, or negative, team may begin the debate. Both teams and speakers alternate speeches until the conclusion of the debate.

Preparation time (3 minutes)

Assess the debaters on the quality of the arguments they make, not on your own personal beliefs or on the arguments you wish they had made. Set aside personal biases as much as possible. Remember they can't read your mind and can only respond to the arguments their opponents actually make.

General Definition: Time alloted for debaters to prepare upcoming speeches. Public Forum: In PF, debaters have 4 minutes of prep time over the course of the entire debate to use as needed. Typically, debaters will keep track of how much time they have used, although the judge may time debaters as well.

"Prep" time differs from tournament to tournament. The most common amount of prep in a debate are 3 minutes. This prep time can be taken in between speeches or at other times, but some tournaments or leagues may have rules about when prep time is allowed to be taken.

Each team/individual may allocate this time as they/she/he see(s) fit during the round, utilizing time prior to speeches for their side. 2. Each debate team may allocate their 3 minutes of preparation time as they see fit.
