There is a Form I-864 and I-864A; both are similar but unique forms with their own purposes. A joint sponsor prepares another Form I-864. A household member prepares Form I-864A, Contract Between Sponsor and Household Member. But that's not the extent of the differences.

Since you filed taxes jointly you will have to submit the joint tax return (or preferably the tax transcript from the IRS), but your spouse doesn't have to sign the I-864A or fill out another one herself, unless your individual income is insufficient.

There is never any need to prove the "relationship" between the co-sponsor and his/her "household member", given that their being married, filing taxes jointly and living in the same household is "proof enough" in and of itself.

Each Form I-864A is completed and signed by two individuals: a sponsor who is completing Form I-864 and a household member who is promising to make his or her income and/or assets available to the sponsor to help support the sponsored immigrants.

Form I-864EZ, Affidavit of Support, is a shorter and simpler version of Form I-864, Affidavit of Support. ... Form I-864 or Form I-864EZ is legally required for many family-based immigrants to show that the intending immigrant has adequate means of financial support and is not likely to become a public charge.

Form I-864A, Contract Between Sponsor and Household Member, is an attachment to Form I-864, Affidavit of Support Under Section 213A of the INA. A separate Form I-864A must be used for each household member whose income and/or assets are being used by a sponsor to qualify.

I-864a Household Member He/she must submit form I-864A, which basically represents a contract between the sponsor, household member, and impending immigrant. By agreeing to complete this form, one commits to including his/her income to the income of the main sponsor.

You must be at least 18 years of age to act as a sponsor and sign Form I-864A. A legal guardian may also sign for a mentally incompetent person. If you are under guardianship, your legal guardian may print your name and sign Form I-864A for you.
