What is Alabama exemption certificate?

An Alabama Sales Tax Certificate of Exemption shall be used by persons, firms, or corporations coming under the provisions of the Alabama Sales Tax Act who are not required to have a Sales Tax License.

If you are over 65 years of age, or permanent and totally disabled (regardless of age), or blind (regardless of age), you are exempt from the state portion of property tax. County taxes may still be due. Please contact your local taxing official to claim your homestead exemption.

An Alabama Sales Tax Certificate of Exemption shall be used by persons, firms, or corporations coming under the provisions of the Alabama Sales Tax Act who are not required to have a Sales Tax License.

You may submit a new application or if you have an application on file with the department that is less than three years old and the information is still current, you may send an email request to stexemptionunit@revenue.alabama.gov to renew the certificate of exemption.

You must complete the appropriate application found on the website at .revenue.alabama.gov. The applicable form will be ST: EX-A1 (For Wholesalers, Manufacturers, and Other Product Based Exemptions) or ST: EX-A1-SE (For Statutorily Exempt Entities).

Nonprofit organizations, including charities, have no special exemption from Alabama sales and use taxes.
