Eligibility you have a physical disability (including sensory disability, for example blindness), a mental disability (including learning difficulties), or both. your disability is severe enough for you to need help caring for yourself or someone to supervise you, for your own or someone else's safety.

Some of these conditions include chronic pain, mobility issues, visual or hearing impairments, neurological disorders and cognitive disorders (such as a form of dementia like Alzheimer's).

You won't be able to get Attendance Allowance if you already get: Personal Independence Payment (PIP) Disability Living Allowance (DLA) to pay for your care (the 'care component' of DLA) Adult Disability Payment.

There are 2 different 'rates' of Attendance Allowance - you'll either get £72.65 or £108.55 a week. You can spend the money however you like - it could help you stay independent in your own home for longer.

The most common reason for applicants being rejected is not putting down specific issues or symptoms. Often, people applying for Attendance Allowance won't say exactly how significant their condition is or the effect it has on their day-to-day life.

It's really important that you explain how many times you need or get help each day for the 'care needs' questions. You should also explain how many times you have difficulties. For example if you need help or have difficulty getting to and from the toilet, remember to write the total amount for the day.

If you were told you can't get Attendance Allowance and your condition changes and you need more care or supervision, then you'll have to make a new claim (you can still continue with your appeal as well). Get advice from your nearest Citizens Advice if your circumstances change while you're appealing.

You can claim Attendance Allowance if all the following apply: You have a long-term physical or mental illness or disability. You have needed help with your personal care (for example, washing and dressing), or supervision to keep you safe, for at least six months before claiming. You're over State Pension age.
