In March 2003, the U.S. Coast Guard (USCG), and related OIG responsibilities, were transferred from the Department of Transportation to the new Department of Homeland Security created by the Homeland Security Act of 2002.

The Coast Guard is the only branch of the U.S. Armed Forces within the Department of Homeland Security.
