When transferring online, buyers need the seller's last name and vehicle plate number. Sellers need the buyer's driver's licence number and last name. Some vehicle transfers cannot be done online and only the written form can be used.

If you have sold a vehicle, you need to let the Department of Transport (DOT) know within seven days. If you are the buyer, you must contact DOT within 14 days. Penalties may apply if you don't. Buyers and sellers can either complete a form (PDF) or transfer the licence online.

If you have lost or damaged your vehicle licence document (rego papers) or need proof of vehicle ownership, you can get a copy of the vehicle licence document via your online DoTDirect account. If you don't have a DoTDirect account you can request a copy in person. A fee is applicable for the document.

Fees. A title transfer is generally $42.00 plus sales tax on the value of the vehicle. Sales tax is not applicable on gift transactions if proof is submitted that shows the previous owner already paid Washington sales tax.

You can transfer it online if the previous owner has submitted the Notice of Disposal. If the Notice of Disposal has not been submitted by the seller you can still complete this transaction at a service centre within 14 days from the date of purchase to avoid a late transfer fee.

Once the trailer has successfully passed the inspection, you can complete an application to license a vehicle using form VL17.
