Think about the scores and decide if it makes sense for you to bid 45+ and get set, rather than them taking and making the bid. If your opponents have leg bid that they have double pinochle, it almost always makes sense to bid 55+.

Starting with the person to the left of the dealer, each player can Pass, Bid-or-Bunch, or Open (opening starts the bid at 25). If no player opens, then the cards are re-delt. If at least one player opens, the opposing team is allowed to counter by sequentially increasing the bid until one team gives in a Passes.

The objective of the game is to be the first team to score 150 or more points. Pinochle is played with 48 cards (two sets of 9s through Aces). In Pinochle, cards are ranked as Aces (high), 10s, Kings, Queens, Jacks, and 9s.

Four play in two partnerships, with partners sitting opposite each other. All the cards are dealt out in four rounds of three cards. Each side's aim is to score 100 or more points over as many deals as necessary. Points are scored for melds and tricks as in cutthroat.

Four-handed pinochle, or "partnership pinochle" is played with two teams of two players each. Partners are seated opposite from each other. Each player is dealt 12 cards. The opening bid is typically 150, but can be a higher agreed on value.

A standard deck pinochle game consists of two cards from the 9 aces, but in a double deck game which is played by 4 players, the two decks are combined and the 9's are removed. Each team has two players, and a deck of 48 cards composed of tens aces, kings, queens, jacks, tens and nines.

Each trick consists of a lead and a play. The non-dealer leads; thereafter the winner of each trick leads next. When a trump is led, it wins the trick unless the opponent plays a higher trump. When any other suit is led, the card led wins unless the opponent plays a higher card of the same suit or a trump.

Counters: “A 10 K” means that the Ace, 10, and King are each worth 10 points. “A 10 K Q” means the Ace and 10 are each worth 10 and the King and Queen are worth 5 each. “A 10 K Q J” means the Ace is worth 11, 10 worth 10, King worth 4, Queen worth 3, and Jack worth 2.
