Yes, starting with the 2024 model year, the Advanced Clean Trucks (ACT) regulation requires manufacturers to sell ZEVs as an increasing percent of total medium- and heavy-duty sales in California. By the end of the 2024 model year 5% to 9% of sales will need to be ZEVs depending on the truck category.

Starting January 1, 2024, 50% of vehicle purchases must be zero-emission vehicles and 100% of purchases must be zero-emission starting January 1, 2027. Small government fleets (those with 10 or fewer vehicles) and those in designated counties must start their ZEV purchases beginning in 2027.

Beginning on January 1, 2024, all trucks operating in California will need proof of compliance with California Air Resources Board (CARB) regulations to continue operating in the state. Vehicles must be registered in the Clean Truck Check database by Dec. 31.

The California Air Resources Board is now requiring all small engines manufactured in 2024 and afterward to be zero emissions. This move by the CARB has started a nationwide conversation about gas versus battery-powered engines, especially with recent developments in high-capacity battery technology and charging.

To show compliance, manufacturers must apply to CARB for certification of their vehicles and engines. Traditionally, manufacturers have submitted these applications in paper format. They are reviewed by certification staff and stored at CARB.
