Baseline TB screening includes: (1) two-step TST or single TB blood test, (2) TB symptom screen, and (3) assessment of the patient's risk factors for TB exposure and progression.

This questionnaire must be administered to all child care providers, by a licensed health care professional, before coming into contact with children. Directors, operators, additional caregivers, substitutes, and individuals who volunteer more than once a week must be screened.

The TB skin test is also called the Mantoux tuberculin skin test (TST). A TB skin test requires two visits with a health care provider. On the first visit the test is placed; on the second visit the health care provider reads the test.

TB Skin Testing Results Your doctor may do more tests to be sure. These could include blood tests or an X-ray of your chest. They may also want to test your sputum -- that's the gunk you cough up. Urine or tissue samples can also tell your doctor if the TB germs have begun to spread, or become “active.”

Pertinent elements of the physical exam for tuberculosis disease include general characteristics such as height, weight, temperature, heart rate, respiratory rate, and blood pressure; a thorough pulmonary examination; inspection and palpation of lymph nodes; and inspection for scars of scrofula and prior chest surgery.

There are two kinds of tests used to detect TB bacteria in the body: the TB skin test (TST) and TB blood tests. A positive TB skin test or TB blood test only tells that a person has been infected with TB bacteria. It does not tell whether the person has latent TB infection (LTBI) or has progressed to TB disease.

Your health care provider may take a sample of the mucus that comes up when you cough, also called sputum. If you have active TB disease in your lungs or voice box, lab tests can detect the bacteria. A relatively quick laboratory test can tell if the sputum likely has the TB bacteria.
