A poker run is an organized event in which participants, usually using motorcycles, all-terrain vehicles, boats, snowmobiles, horses, on foot or other means of transportation, must visit five to seven checkpoints, drawing a playing card at each one. The object is to have the best poker hand at the end of the run.

A run, straight or sequence is a combination of playing cards where cards have consecutive rank values. They need not normally be of the same suit.

Straight (Run): Five sequential cards, not of the same suit. Three of a Kind: Three cards of the same rank e.g. three Aces, three Kings etc. Two Pair: Two sets of pairs e.g. a pair of Aces and a pair of Kings.

A poker run will follow a predetermined route, often through a scenic, historic or urban area. The run will consist of five predetermined stops. At each stop, every participant draws a playing card and has it noted on a scorecard.

How many decks of cards are needed for a poker run? Depending on the number of participants and checkpoints, you'll need multiple decks. A good rule of thumb is to have one deck per checkpoint for every 50 participants.

Each runout is worth exactly one half of the pot. If each player wins one runout, the overall pot will hence be split. Note that any remaining cards in a hand of poker will be dealt once by default. Running it twice will only occur if all all-in parties reach a consensus that this should happen.
