Each test is allotted three hours. DLIFLC conducted several timing studies for both multiple-choice and constructed-response tests to see how long it took examinees to answer; based on that, we set initial test times, which we then refined after additional studies.

Test scores determine the amount of Foreign Language Proficiency Pay (FLPP) that a military linguist receives, and also whether they are qualified for certain positions that require language aptitude. DLPT scores may also figure into the readiness rating of a military linguist unit.

A: To request a DA 330 of DLPT/OPI Scores (not DLPT/OPI ACE college credit recommendations), please contact the Test Control Officer (TCO) at the location where you took the test. The DLIFLC Testing Office can only generate DA 330s of the DLPTs/OPIs for personnel who physically tested at DLIFLC.

The DLPT5 includes separate tests for reading and listening comprehension. In addition, many languages have both lower-range tests going from level 0+ through 3 and upper-range tests going from level 3 to 4. In the "big" languages (for example, Russian, Chinese and Arabic) the test format will be multiple-choice.

Students take the Defense Language Proficiency Test (DLPT) when graduating, passing if they achieve a score of L2/R2 (2 on the Listening portion, 2 on the Reading).

Scores are valid as long as they were in the past, typically one year. If you took the DLPT IV in April of one year, and the DLPT5 rolled out in May, your DLPT IV score is good until the following April, as usual; and at that point you would take the DLPT5.

DLPT Scoring: For the DLPT5, scores are reported ing to the ILR (Interagency Language Roundtable) Proficiency Level Descriptors (0, 0+, 1, 1+, 2, 2+, 3, 3+, 4).
