NATO Personnel Security Clearance Certificate shall be issued based on a written application, signed by the head of the organization and submitted to ORNISS through the Internal Registry.

A valid security clearance at the appropriate level (the level depends upon the requirements of the post) must be received in the Agency Security Office before we can hire you. This formality is carried out by your national authorities, upon NATO's request.

Cosmic Top Secret (CTS) – Applied to information that would cause exceptionally grave damage to NATO and is the essentially the same as U.S. Top Secret. NATO Secret (NS) – This is the same as U.S. Secret, information that would cause serious damage to NATO.

NATO FACILITY AND PERSONNEL CLEARANCE REQUIREMENTS. 1. A NATO Facility Clearance Certificate is required for any contractor to negotiate or perform on a NATO classified contract or subcontract.

Beyond that, four levels of security classification exist: NATO RESTRICTED, NATO CONFIDENTIAL, NATO SECRET, AND COSMIC TOP SECRET. In general, the most common security marking at NATO is Unclassified and Restricted. Confidential and Secret are less common, and the least common marking is Cosmic Top Secret.

The security clearance procedure varies from one country to another, but takes on average between six to eight months to complete. However, Government employees by Order-in-council are not subjected to this policy. Clearances at the reliability status and secret levels are valid for 10 years, whereas top secret is valid for 5 years. However, departments are free to request their employees to undergo security screening any time for cause.
