When transferring a horse's ownership, you'll need: A completed transfer report form or signed bill of sale stating the horse's registered name and/or number, the date of sale and signed by the record owner on file with AQHA. The original certificate of registration.

There are 23 recognized American Quarter Horse colors: chestnut, sorrel, black, brown, gray, bay, palomino, buckskin, smoky black, smoky cream, cremello, perlino, white, classic champagne, amber champagne, gold champagne, dun, red dun, grullo, red roan, bay roan, brown roan, and blue roan.

Sorrel and chestnut – the most common colors in the American Quarter Horse – are genetically the same color.

A registration document is extremely useful in any court trial where ownership of a horse is in dispute. Ownership of a horse may be established in a Bill of Sale, a written agreement between the seller and buyer (or agents such as trainers or bloodstock agents) or by contract construction.

Any horse with excessive white – see Rule 205(d) in the AQHA Handbook – will have a notation on its registration certificate saying “This horse has white markings designated under AQHA rules as an undesirable trait and uncharacteristic of the breed.”
