The Emergency Substitute Certification is a one-year certificate, requires a minimum of 64 semester hours of college coursework completed in any content from a regionally accredited institution and a minimum GPA of 2.5. However, GPA requirements do not pertain to applicants holding a bachelor's degree or higher.

To serve as a teacher, an individual must possess a teaching certificate. The Option 9 alternative route only provides for initial certification once the candidate completes the bachelor's degree and certification assessments.

The PRAXIS Subject Assessments are national standardized tests for teacher certification. Passing scores on the PRAXIS Subject Assessments are required by the state of Kentucky to become a certified teacher. Please refer to specific PRAXIS requirements listed under the middle and secondary M.A.T.

Only the individual educator can access the certificate, as he or she must log into the personal EPSB account. School districts should verify the educator's credential information listed on the printed copy certificate in Kentucky Educator Certification Inquiry (KECI) on the EPSB website.

What is Option 6? An Option 6 certification is the most commonly used alternative route for pursuing teacher certification in Kentucky. This is a university-based program that allows a minimum of a non-teaching bachelor's to pursue initial teacher certification at participating universities.

Completion of local district training programs: A candidate can earn their teaching certification by completing an approved local program that a local school district organizes. Additional requirements include a bachelor's degree with a final GPA of at least 2.75 and a pending employment offer.

Once you receive your Kentucky teaching certificate, it is valid for five years.
