Definition. A document issued by a vendor to certify the origin of the vendor's product.

A by-product stockfeed includes any plant material not produced primarily for livestock consumption, such as waste fruit, vegetables and fibre crops including peel, pulp, pressings, pomace, grape marc, stem and leaf material, and molasses.

Byproduct feeds are feed ingredients that have had nutrients extracted for human or commercial applications. Examples include soybean meal (oil removed for industrial and human food uses), fuzzy whole cottonseed (fiber used for clothing) and corn distillers grain (production of ethanol as a fuel).

We can conveniently classify feeds into three main types: (1) roughages, (2) concentrates, and (3) mixed feeds. Roughages include pasture forages, hays, silages, and byproduct feeds that contain a high percentage of fiber.

Animal by-products (ABPs) are materials obtained from animals which are not intended for human consumption. ABPs include: Slaughterhouse waste (skin, bones, horn and hooves, blood, fat and offal).

Byproducts like whole cottonseed, dried distillers' grains (DDGS), and brewers grains can be classified as an energy and protein supplement due to their high nutritional quality. This is why it is important to identify first what your herd needs.

All introduced stock feeds should be accompanied by a Commodity Vendor Declaration (CVD) to guarantee that the feed purchased is safe from chemical contamination. The CVD needs to provide details of: The chemical(s) used to treat the commodity. The rate and date of chemical application.
