In Illinois, college students are required to take a teacher performance assessment test known as edTPA to get their license.

The Professional Educator License can be issued without student teaching with no stipulations. This requirement is up to each institution to decide.

Scores are reported within 3 weeks of submission of the edTPA electronic portfolio. Each portfolio is scored individually on a range from 1-5. There is no minimum score for individual rubrics, but Teacher Candidates should aim to achieve a score of 3-4 on each to ensure they earn the minimum cut score of 35.

edTPA (educational Teacher Performance Assessment) is a national performance based assessment currently being implemented in 694 educator preparation programs in 38 states and the District of Columbia.

The edTPA has been eliminated through August 31, 2025. SB 1488 was signed into law August 4, 2023, and is now PA 103-0488. This law eliminates the edTPA immediately and through August 31, 2025. The edTPA is no longer required for in-state program completers or out-of-state applicants.

edTPA Update On August 4, 2023, Governor Pritzker approved Public Act 103-0488 which establishes that no candidate completing a teacher preparation program is required to pass a teacher performance assessment through August 31, 2025.

Illinois is working towards overcoming the teaching shortage in schools by removing the often-criticized edTPA requirement for education programs.

Senate Bill 1488, filed by Bennett, would waive the edTPA requirement through August 31, 2025. The legislation would also create the Teacher Performance Assessment Task Force, which would be tasked with developing a new evaluation system for teaching students.
