Frawley-O'Dea and Sarnat (2001) classify psychodynamic supervision into three categories: patient-centered, supervisee-centered, and supervisorymatrixcentered. Patient-centered began with Freud and, as the name implies, focuses the supervision session on the patient's presentation and behaviors.

3 Main areas of Supervision Normative (i.e. monitoring-based): the supervisor asks the counsellor to account and justify their work. Restorative (i.e. support-based): the supervisor offers support if the counsellor is struggling with an ethical issue or an aspect of their practice.
