North Carolina General Statue § 7B-300 requires that "The director of the department of social services in each county of the State shall establish protective services for juveniles alleged to be abused, neglected, or dependent.
The Division of Social Services (DSS) provides guidance and technical assistance to agencies that provide direct services that address issues of poverty, family violence and exploitation.
Child Protective Services Requests If you are requesting information as part of an open case involving CPS, please submit the DSS-5277-ia. Requests must be submitted on your agency letterhead. A fax cover page on letterhead is acceptable.
Use of the Responsible Individuals List (RIL) is required by North Carolina statute. Agencies must follow law, rule, and policy when using the RIL. The RIL is in place to ensure anyone who has caused harm or maltreatment to a child is not placed in a position giving them access to children.
Moreover, the law requires that all information and records shared must be withheld from public inspection and maintained in a confidential manner. Any violation of these confidentiality requirements will be punishable as a Class 1 misdemeanor.
