The 72 hours of a psych hold, often known as a time for observation, mainly involve monitoring and evaluating the patient to determine if they need more long-term treatment for their mental illness. The process is as follows: Upon arrival, the patient will answer questions about themselves and their symptoms.

Section 12(b) allows for an individual to be admitted to a psychiatric unit for up to three business days against the individual's will or without the individual's consent.

Section 35 is a Massachusetts law that allows a qualified person to request a court order requiring someone to be civilly committed and treated involuntarily for an alcohol or substance use disorder.

Section 12 is a transportation order to a hospital. Once the patient arrives at the hospital he/she must be evaluated by a physician (psychiatrist) to determine if he/she needs to be involuntarily committed for no more than 72 hours. Only the physician can make the commitment determination.

Individuals (such as family members) can ask the court to order an emergency mental health commitment, called Section 12 (e) or a commitment for treatment of alcohol or substance use disorder, called a Section 35, by speaking to a clerk in the court.
