North Carolina does not charge for your IFTA application or your decals.

Licenses and decals expire on December 31st, of each calendar year. Annual renewal period starts in September each year. Complete and submit Form GAS-1274A, Renewal Application for License and Decals. License and Decals cannot be renewed by telephone request.

The temporary decal permit is available directly from the Fuel Unit. The 30-day temporary decal permit must be carried in the vehicle along with a copy of your fuel license and must be presented to any law enforcement officer on demand.

Fuel Decals are REQUIRED for the following: * All vehicles with a “registered weight” OR “actual weight” of over 26,000 lbs. * All vehicles with a “combined weight” of over 26,000 lbs (this means a “power unit” with an attached trailer, etc.

So, who needs an IFTA sticker and permit? A qualified vehicle is defined as one that is designed, maintained, and used to transport people or property. Also, the vehicle must have 2 axles with a GVW of more than 26,000 pounds; or have 3 axles regardless of weight; or have a combination GVW of more than 26,000 pounds.

You will need to complete a North Carolina application form and submit by mail, fax or in person to the Department of Revenue. There is no fee for decals. You will need one set per qualified vehicle. Incomplete applications will be returned, which will delay processing.
