The law requires only the following types of subcontractors to be licensed as a contractor: *Electrical, *Plumbing, Mechanical, *HVAC and Roofing whenever the total cost of the project for each of these portions is $25,000 or more; *Masonry subcontractors when the total portion is $100,000 or more.

A handyman in Tennessee is not required to hold a state license unless the job they are working on is worth more than $25,000. A home improvement license is required for remodeling jobs worth between $3,000 and $24,999. Licenses are awarded by the Department of Commerce and Insurance Board for Licensing Contractors.

Application Fee - $250.00 and issued for two (2) years. License Approval - It takes approximately 4 to 6 weeks to be granted a license (do NOT contract, bid or offer prior to obtaining a license). Board review and approval is required. A license may be issued prior to the next Board meeting if approved by the Board.

Anyone hired by the property owner is required to be licensed if they perform $25,000 or more of the work, as these contractors would be considered prime contractors since they are contracting directly with the owner.

A standard business license is needed from your county and/or municipal clerk if your gross receipts are $10,000 or more.

Responsibilities. A general contractor is responsible for providing all of the material, labor, equipment (such as engineering vehicles and tools) and services necessary for the construction of the project. A general contractor often hires specialized subcontractors to perform all or portions of the construction work.

State law exempts gross receipts from services provided by medical, dental, legal, and educational providers and certain services provided by nonprofit membership organizations. Services by religious and charitable organizations and veterinary services are also exempt from business tax.
