Right now, a foster parent is paid about $810 per month to care for a child. As a former foster child, Caldier personally takes the obligation of the state to make sure that if offers the best environment for each child.

Current at 1 July 2021 per child: • 0–6 years: $409.20 per fortnight • 7–12 years: $481.83 per fortnight • 13–18 years: $554.45 per fortnight plus 10% or 20% loading for selected country regions. The subsidy is not taxable.

Families adopting special needs children through the public child welfare system may qualify for adoption support (adoption subsidy), a negotiated monthly cash payment provided to adoptive families to help pay for some of the expense involved in raising a child with special needs.

The basic rates for standard maintenance range from $450 to $700 per month depending on the age of the child. Annual clothing allowance is also age-dependent and afforded to foster parents in the amount of $300 to $500 per year.

In most cases, the foster care licensing process in Washington State takes 6–9 months. Families interested in foster care should plan on committing time to attend classes, complete required training, coordinate several assessment interviews, and have a home study completed.

If you're a new foster parent or kinship caregiver in Washington, you can take advantage of the state's new insurance program to take up to 12 weeks of paid time off of work. You'll receive up to 90 percent of your weekly pay—a maximum of $1,327 a week—when you qualify.
