Today, the Lummi reservation comprises about 20,000 acres in Whatcom County on Puget Sound, in northwestern Washington State. Most Lummi people work in tribal government or tribal enterprises or in nearby towns, although many still earn an income from fishing.

Once the customer has completed and submitted an application or review, they can then call our Contact Center at 1-877-501-2233 between 8am and 2pm (on business days) and request a callback appointment.

We are a Sovereign Nation and Self-Governing Nation. We are governed by an elected eleven member Lummi Indian Business Council (LIBC), various commissions, and the General Council composed of voting age enrolled members that elect the LIBC.

Today, approximately 12,000 acres remain in Indian control. In 1948 the Lummi Nation adopted a Tribal Constitution, amended and ratified in 1970, which created the present government structure. The reservation occupies a small peninsula between Bellingham Bay and Georgia Strait.

Living on Lummi Island offers a change of pace, a closer connection to the natural world, and greater involvement in a small community. In addition, unlike the ferry situation with the other San Juan islands, the Lummi Island ferry is more affordable, the ride is short, and the runs are frequent.

An estimated 6,590 people live on the Lummi Reservation. Roughly 2,564 are enrolled tribal members, and 665 are either related to or live with an enrolled tribal member. Some 3,361 are neither tribal members nor affiliated with any member of the Lummi Nation.

Lummi Nation, Lhaq'temish, is one of the numerous tribes of the Coast Salish Peoples. They are a federally recognized Nation by the 1855 Treaty of Point Elliott and have a reservation in north Bellingham, Washington.
