In military law, a reduction in rank or degradation is a demotion in military rank as punishment for a crime or wrongdoing, imposed by a court-martial or other authority.

The DA Form 4187 must be signed by you, your company, battalion, and in some units, the brigade commander. Your DA Form 4187 will be routed to your S1 for input into the system (EDAS) or will be sent to your branch manager for approval. Based on my experience, branch managers usually make a decision within a week.

Reduction in Grade: E-4 or below may be reduced to E-1; E-5 and E-6 may be reduced one pay grade if the officer imposing the punishment has the authority to promote to E-5 and E-6. Reduction for E-7 and above varies depending upon service.

What is a 4187 used for? A DA Form 4187 will be used by the Department of the Army. This particular form is known as a Personnel Action form. It is used by a soldier who wants to request a personnel action on their own behalf.

A sergeant first class is considered the first senior non-commissioned officer, and gains not only notice but several benefits due the position. For example, a sergeant first class cannot be demoted by standard non-judicial punishment.

To initiate the processing of a personnel action being requested by the soldier.

Reassignment/Deletion/Deferment & Attachments. To be considered for Compassionate action, Soldiers must submit their request through their Chain of Command by utilizing a DA Form 4187. Other individuals cannot initiate such actions on behalf of the Soldier.

To demote a senior non-commissioned officer requires a court martial, or congressional approval, and normally occurs only for offenses that carry heavy punishments. Their pay grade is E-7.
