IGETC satisfies the lower division GE for either a UC or CSU, whereas the CSU GE Breadth pattern only satisfies lower division GE at CSU. The CSU GE has additional requirements that transfer specialists can describe.

Compared to IGETC, CSU G.E./Breadth is more flexible and offers more choices in many of the areas. Students transferring to most CSUs can double count their Social Science or Humanities and American Institutions if using the pattern. IGETC does not allow this.

Completion of the IGETC is not an admission requirement or admission guarantee for transfer to CSU or UC, nor is it the only way to fulfill the lower-division, general education requirements for CSU or UC prior to transfer.

What's IGETC? The Intersegmental General Education Transfer Curriculum (IGETC) is a series of courses that California community college students can complete to satisfy most freshman/sophomore-level general education requirements before transferring to UC.

Because the IGETC pattern is accepted by both the CSU and University of California, with minor differences, it's a good option if you're undecided about the system to which you will transfer.

UCLA. All Schools accept IGETC. However, completion of IGETC is not required/encouraged for students applying to the School of Engineering; engineering students are instead encouraged to focus on lower-division major preparation prior to transfer.
