How long does a refund from NYCERS take?

Usually it takes about 6 - 8 months after your last day paid. However, if there is an unusually large number of retirement applications filed at one time, such as during an Early Retirement Incentive, or if we have difficulty gathering infor- mation, it may take longer.

If the retiree dies before the designated beneficiary, the beneficiary will continue to receive either the same (100%) lifetime annual retirement allowance ($16,400) or one-half (50%) of the lifetime annual retirement allowance ($8,200), depending on the retiree's se- lection.

Taxes at Retirement However, you may roll over the taxable portion to an IRA or Employer Plan. In the event you choose not to roll over the taxable amount, NYCERS is required to withhold 20% Federal tax before issuing the check.

Customer Service Center. Contact the Call Center for information. Fully completed forms may be placed in a secure Drop Box at NYCERS' 340 Jay Street entrance Mon-Fri, 8 am-5 pm.

However, early retirement carries a penalty of a permanent reduction in your retirement benefit at a rate of 6.5% for each year that you have retired prior to age 63.

The 62/5 Retirement Plan, also referred to as the Basic Tier 4 Plan, allows participants to retire with a full pension at age 62 with at least five years of Credited Service, or with a reduced pension between the ages of 55 and 61.

In addition, if you are under the age of 59½ you will also be subject to the 10% early distribution penalty tax assessed by the IRS. Exceptions to this penalty may apply, especially if you leave City service during or after the year in which you attain age 55.
