DISTANCE EDUCATION (OPEN AND DISTANCE LEARNING) Today two terms that are being used almost inter-changeably are 'Open Learning' and 'Distance Education' and they are often combined to be known as Open and Distance Learning (ODL).

Moodle is a free and open-source learning management system written in PHP and distributed under the GNU General Public License. Moodle is used for blended learning, distance education, flipped classroom and other online learning projects in schools, universities, workplaces and other sectors.

1. OPEN AND DISTANCE LEARNING (ODL) & ONLINE LEARNING (OL)

Moodle LMS is an excellent choice for delivering online courses due to its flexibility, ease of use, multimedia support, assessment tools, and community support.

In online mode, only selected programmes are available and hence lesser students opt for the online mode whereas in the Offline Distance Mode, a large number of programms(Degree/Certificate/Diploma) are available and hence large number of students get enrolled in this mode.

The most reported challenges were lack of sufficient time for study, difficulties in access and use of ICT, ineffective feedback and lack of study materials.

Open and Distance Learning (ODL) refers to the provision of flexible educational opportunities in terms of access and multiple modes of knowledge acquisition. Flexible means the availability of choices for educational endeavors anywhere, anytime and anyhow.

As mentioned above, the Open and Distance Learning (ODL) is a way of learning remotely without being in regular face-to-face contact with instructor in the classroom. ODL at UTM offers a new way of combining innovative learning and teaching techniques with interaction with lecturer and students from around the world.
