Under federal law, people are generally prohibited from purchasing or possessing firearms if they have been convicted of a felony or some domestic violence misdemeanors, or if they are subject to certain court orders related to domestic violence or a serious mental condition.

Only “Immediate” Family Members Qualify. Washington law only allows unregulated family gun transfers between “immediate” family members. For this purpose, the law defines immediate family members as: Spouses and Domestic Partners.

An unloaded handgun kept in a vehicle must be locked within the vehicle and concealed from view. Washington generally prohibits the possession or transportation of a loaded rifle or shotgun in or on a motor vehicle.

(1)(a) Except in the person's place of abode or fixed place of business, a person shall not carry a pistol concealed on his or her person without a license to carry a concealed pistol.

While one needs a license to carry a concealed firearm, Washington residents DO NOT need a license to openly carry a firearm. The only restriction is that openly carrying a firearm is prohibited in all areas where concealed carry is prohibited.

Washington imposes a 10 day waiting period on the sales and transfers of “semiautomatic assault rifles.” While not a mandatory waiting period, Washington allows ten days to complete a background check on a prospective purchaser prior to delivery of other firearms.

3. Can I Open Carry in Washington State? Open Carry is legal but you must have a valid permit/license to carry a loaded handgun in any vehicle in Washington. This includes cars, buses and trains.

The majority of states require a person to have a permit to carry a loaded, concealed handgun in public.
