§ 115C-378. (b) No person shall encourage, entice or counsel any child of compulsory school age to be unlawfully absent from school. The parent, guardian, or custodian of a child shall notify the school of the reason for each known absence of the child, in ance with local school board policy.

The North Carolina Compulsory Attendance Law requires that absences be recorded as excused or unexcused. If your child accumulates excessive unexcused absences a referral will be made to the school social worker.

After not more than six unexcused absences, the principal or the principal's designee shall notify the parent, guardian, or custodian by mail that he or she may be in violation of the Compulsory Attendance Law and may be prosecuted if the absences cannot be justified under the established attendance policies of the ...

If your child fails to follow the School Attendance Order and continues to have unlawful absences, the child will be considered a Chronic Truant. The child can be placed on probation or required to enter a Department of Juvenile Justice Institution. Also, you may be fined up to $50 or imprisoned for up to 30 days.

The CMS policy says a high school student who misses more than 10 days of any class – whether the absence is excused or unexcused – will fail the course.

Excessive Absences Students, who miss more than ten days in a class, whether excused or unexcused, will be subject to an attendance based failure (FF).
