Michigan state law allows homeowners to obtain permits to work on their own homes. It is against the law for contractors to perform work under permits obtained by homeowners. The contractor you hire to complete a home construction project should be the person who obtains the permit from the city.

Section 23a of the state construction code act of 1972, 1972 PA 230, MCL 125.1523a, prohibits a person from conspiring to circumvent the licensing requirements of this state relating to persons who are to perform work on a residential building or a residential structure.

The Construction Code Commission was created by 1972 PA 230 to improve the quality of housing for Michigan residents while assisting the housing industry. The Commission appoints the members to the Building Officials Advisory Board created by section 3 of former 1986 PA 54, also found in PA 407 of 2016.
