Does NZ have special forces?

Security threats throughout the world have become more complex, so it's vital the NZDF has modern facilities to train Special Operations personnel. The training is as realistic as possible, so when the Special Forces deploy they are fully prepared for the challenging situations they are placed in.

The Special Operations Component Command manages New Zealand's Special Operations Forces (NZSOF). NZSOF respond to high priority opportunities or threats, not requiring numerical strength, for which either task or the environment precludes the use of conventional forces.

Traditionally only military personnel from either the regular or reserve component of the NZ Defence Force have been able to join the NZSAS. However, entry is now open to civilian applicants as NZSAS has become an official trade specialisation with the NZ Army.

For the New Zealand Government, the NZSAS is the “premier combat unit of the New Zealand Defence Force.” They had taken part in particular missions where their operators showed why they are number one in their country. They are placed at position #5 on the Top 10 Special Operations Forces Around the World list.

The first aircraft will be delivered to the NZ Ministry of Defence in December, with the next three arriving in 2023. Then-defence minister Ron Mark announced the P-8s as the P3's replacement in 2018 and said they would cost a total of $2.346 billion.

Privates (recently graduated soldiers) usually earn between $61,000 and $70,000. Lance corporals and corporals usually earn between $66,000 and $77,000. Sergeants and staff sergeants usually earn between $80,000 and $106,000. Warrant officers can earn between $101,000 and $120,000.

The 1st New Zealand Special Air Service Regiment, abbreviated as 1 NZSAS Regt, was formed on 7 July 1955 and is the special forces unit of the New Zealand Army, closely modelled on the British Special Air Service (SAS).
