Texas law requires security guards to be licensed, and submit certain items (fingerprints, criminal history check), before they can be granted authorization to work in the industry. The Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) regulates both commissioned and non-commissioned security guards.

The private security profession includes armed and unarmed security guards, personal protection officers, private investigators, alarm systems installers and monitors, armored car couriers, electronic access control device installers, and locksmiths.

The typical requirements for a security company include being at least 18 years of age, successfully completing a high school diploma prior to applying, possessing U.S. citizenship or authorization to work in Texas, the ability to speak and write in English, and passing a background screening.

The Texas Code allows detainment when a security guard witnesses a felony offense. Guards can also detain suspects if there is probable cause to believe that an offense has been committed.

The Department of Public Safety (DPS) regulates the private security profession in Texas.

Can volunteer security team members legally carry firearms? Yes, but only as permitted under Texas law. Generally, a person may carry loaded long guns (rifles and shotguns) in Texas without a license.

(1) Arson, damage to property--Any offense under the Texas Penal Code, Chapter 28. (2) Assault--Any offense under the Texas Penal Code, Chapter 22. (3) Bribery--Any offense under the Texas Penal Code, Chapter 36. (4) Burglary and criminal trespass--Any offense under the Texas Penal Code, Chapter 30.
