Schedule D (Form 1040) is a tax schedule from the IRS that attaches to the Form 1040, U.S. Individual Income Tax Return, Form 1040-SR, or Form 1040NR. It is used to help you calculate their capital gains or losses, and the amount of taxes owed.

Schedule A (Form 1040-NR) – Itemized Deductions- namely for Taxes you Pay- State and Local income taxes, Gifts to U.S. Charities, Casualty and Theft Losses, Job Expenses and certain Miscellaneous Jib expenses, and Other Miscellaneous Deductions.

CAUTION: There are a Schedule A (Form 1040-NR) and a Schedule A (Form 1040). Do not use Schedule A (Form 1040-NR) with Form 1040 or Form 1040-SR. Use Schedule A (Form 1040-NR) only with Form 1040-NR. If using a Schedule A with Form 1040 or 1040-SR, use Schedule A (Form 1040).

Per IRS Publication 519 U.S. Tax Guide for Aliens, nonresident aliens cannot claim the standard deduction. However, a special rule applies to students and business apprentices from India who are eligible for the benefits of Article 21(2) of the United States-India Income Tax Treaty.

If you file Form 1040-NR, use Schedule NEC (Form 1040-NR) to figure your tax on income that is not effectively connected with a U.S. trade or business and to figure your capital gains and losses from sales or exchanges of property that is not effectively connected with a U.S. business.

Schedule A is used to claim itemized deductions that reduce your taxable income and the total amount of taxes you pay. The categories that can be itemized include taxes, interest paid, gifts to charity, medical and dental expenses, casualty and theft losses, and other miscellaneous expenses.
