TRSL is the state's largest public retirement system, providing services and benefits to more than 160,000 individuals. Founded in 1936, TRSL is a governmental defined benefit plan qualified under Section 401(a) of the Internal Revenue Code as a public trust fund to provide retirement benefits for its members.

No. Louisiana law does not allow you to borrow from your retirement fund. You can withdraw your contributions only if you permanently terminate employment in a TRSL-covered position.

Your TRSL benefit is paid to you for your entire life, and is calculated using three factors: 1. your years of TRSL service credit, 2. your final average compensation (FAC), and 3. a benefit factor (2.0% or 2.5%).

Retirement Eligibility: Age 60 with 5 years of service credit. Age 55 with 25 years of service credit. Any age with 30 years of service credit.

You are eligible for one-half of your spouse's social security if he/she is living, and 100% of the social security benefit if he/she has passed; however, if you are drawing TRS, Social Security will subtract two-thirds of your TRS from the spousal benefit.

If your pension is from what Social Security calls “covered” employment, in which you paid Social Security payroll taxes, it has no effect on your benefits.

A TRSL member's retirement benefit is exempt from Louisiana state income tax. However, the benefit is subject to federal income tax and can include both a tax-free amount and a taxable amount.
