You are probably unconsciously familiar with both emergency and exit lighting, but they are not the same thing. Both are vital to maintaining the safety of your business. An exit sign is a sign found in all commercial buildings and many high occupancy residential buildings.

Exit and Emergency lighting provides lighting for occupants to safely exit a building when the normal lighting has failed due to power loss. Each exit and emergency luminaire is fitted with a battery and is required to provide light for at least 90 minutes after the power fails.

EMERGENCY LIGHT FIXTURE ANNUAL 90 MINUTE TESTING. The purpose of the test is: 1. To make sure the EXIT signs are illuminated with normal electrical supply. 2. To make sure all fixtures are illuminated during an electrical power failure for 90 minutes using the battery backup supply.

Most emergency lights or exit signs have a small “push to test” button somewhere on the casing. You can push and hold this button for thirty seconds to test the bulbs and battery.

While fire exits are usually referred to as emergency exits, they exist for the sole purpose of being the escape when usual exit routes are not possible. Unlike the usual exits that open somewhere within the buildings, fire exits open towards the outdoors at a point of safety for the occupants of the building.

There are two main types of emergency lighting: (i) emergency escape lighting; (ii) standby lighting (p. 2). Emergency escape lighting is defined as "that part of emergency lighting that is provided to enable safe exit in the event of failure of the normal supply".

Emergency lighting is required for all means of egress, including both the exits and the pathways leading to them. This includes stairs designated for emergency exit as well as the aisles, corridors, ramps, escalators and other passageways that lead to an exit.
