If your vehicle's been towed, contact the Denver Police Non-Emergency line to locate it: 720-913-2000 (When you get the recorded message, hit 0 for the operator; they will look up your vehicle's location.)

If a towing company damages your vehicle because they failed to take ordinary care—for example, failing to secure a vehicle on the towing bed—you may have a negligence claim for the property damage that they caused.

In Colorado, a trailer being towed cannot exceed 70 feet in total length, including the hitch and bumper. It also cannot exceed a width of 8.5 feet and a height of 14.5 feet. It is dangerous to tow a trailer that exceeds the legal dimensions allowed in Colorado.

Can you be towed without notice in Colorado? For private property tows, the maximum “hook fee” that can be charged is $211.11 for vehicles under 10,000 pounds. An additional charge of $3.80 per mile — up to 12 miles in certain areas and 16.5 in others, depending on how far from I-25 you are — also applies.

While tow truck companies are required to provide access to “emergency” items in Colorado, as in eight other states, they're under no obligation to let people retrieve other belongings.

In Colorado, private property impounds, the vehicle and its contents can remain with the tow company until you pay to have the vehicle released, pay a fee for a personal items release (which goes towards the impound fee if you end up releasing your vehicle), or sign over the title to the tow company.

If you are unable to find your vehicle, please contact the Denver Police Department at 720-913-2000. If your vehicle was impounded, call 720-865-0470 for retrieval.
