The total volume voided depends on many factors but generally, in a healthy adult, should be 1,500-2,000ml.

A PVR volume of less than 50 mL is considered adequate bladder emptying; in the elderly, between 50 and 100 mL is considered normal. In general, a PVR volume greater than 200 mL is considered abnormal and could be due to incomplete bladder emptying or bladder outlet obstruction.

The volume of urine passed each time by a normal adult will vary from around 250 - 400mls. This is the same as about 2 cupful's. Most people with normal bladder habits can hold on for 3-4 hours between visits to the toilet. Most younger adults can also go right through the night without the need to pass urine.

Adults[23]: Less than 50mL PVR is adequate bladder emptying. Over 200mL PVR indicates inadequate emptying.

Urinary bladder and urethra The urinary bladder can store up to 500 ml of urine in women and 700 ml in men. People already feel the need to urinate (pee) when their bladder has between 200 and 350 ml of urine in it.

Normal patterns of urination may vary considerably; adults generally void 5 to 6 times daily but no more than once after retiring. The average 24-hour urinary output is 1200 to 1500 ml. Urinary frequency may occur because of either increased urine volume or decreased bladder capicity (i.e., less than 200 ml).
