4-H History The 4-H program was founded between 1900 and 1910 to provide local educational clubs for rural youth from ages 9 to 19. 4-H was designed to teach better home economics and agricultural techniques and to foster character development and good citizenship.

Since 1961, the Indiana 4‑H Foundation has supported the statewide Indiana 4‑H program that is administered by the Purdue University Cooperative Extension Service in all 92 counties.

The 4-H pledge, written by Otis Hall of the Kansas State College of Agriculture, was officially adopted at the first National 4-H Camp in June 1927. The pledge was changed in 1973 to include “my world.” for my club, my community, my country and my world.

North Dakota is known for its Badlands, now part of the 70,000-acre Theodore Roosevelt National Park. Roosevelt's journey to the Dakota Territory in 1883 to hunt bison was among his Western ventures that instilled in him a fervor for preservation of natural lands, and ultimately the first national parks.
