Medical boards are initiated by the Military Treatment Facility and no action is required by the member's command.

The MEB is convened once the medical retention decision point is reached or when the Service member's physician thinks the Service member will not be able to return to duty for medical reasons.

How do I apply? You do not apply to the MEB. Instead, you are referred by your military physician when you have conditions that they feel make you unfit for duty.

A service member with a medical condition that makes them unfit for duty is referred to the Medical Evaluation Board. The Board reviews their conditions and makes recommendations to the Physical Evaluation Board on which qualify as unfitting.

Limited Duty (LIMDU). The assignment of a member in a duty status for a specified time, following a medical board action, with certain medical limitations/restrictions concerning the duties the member may perform.

The MEB Process is the first step of the medical discharge process. A service member with a medical condition that makes them unfit for duty is referred to the Medical Evaluation Board. The Board reviews their conditions and makes recommendations to the Physical Evaluation Board on which qualify as unfitting.

DoD Directives afford RC members pending separation for medical disqualification (separation for failure to meet medical retention standards) the right to be referred to a PEB for solely a fitness determination. Referral is not mandatory but at the request of the soldier.

A physical or psychological condition that interferes significantly with an individual's fitness for duty can be grounds for discharge. Each Service's disability evaluation system will determine if a servicemember is unfit for duty due to physical disability. Not all medical problems amount to a disability.
