Can you run the pack test?

USDA is an equal employment opportunity employer. Jogging during the test is not permitted. A score of 45 minutes correlates with a step test score of 45 or a 1.5 mile-run time of 11 minutes 40 seconds, the previous standard for wildland firefighters. The Pack Test is not a competition, it is pass/fail only.

Field Test (Moderate): This is a job-related test to determine an individual's ability to perform the minimum standards of moderate duty. It consists of completing a 2-mile walk over level terrain in 30 minutes or less while carrying a 25-pound pack.

To complete the arduous pack test, participants must finish a three-mile hike across relatively level terrain while carrying a 45-pound pack in 45 minutes or less. An ability to complete the test in 45 minutes suggests an aerobic fitness score of 45, which is the standard for wildland firefighters.

The Work Capacity Test (WCT) is a test to ensure a person is physically capable of meeting the minimum fitness requirement associated with assigned wildfire or prescribed fire duties as described in the NWCG Standards for Wildland Fire Position Qualifications, PMS 310-1.

A hat and sunscreen should also be used. The test is a brisk walk; as such no running or jogging is permitted. Personal weight vests or packs can be worn for the Arduous Pack Test as long as they conform to the weight requirement as specified above.

Each Chase is 20 seconds long with one Chaser and one Evader. There is a 25 second Rest Period between Chases. The winning athlete in each Chase stays on as the Evader for the next Chase. A team is awarded one point for each Evasion they make (I.e. when the Evader lasts 20 seconds without getting caught).

Arduous: involves field work callingfor above-average endurance and superior conditioning. required to perform arduous duty. Moderate: involves field work requiring complete control of physical faculties and may include considerable walking, standing and lifting 25-50 lbs.

For the Pack Test, begin by hiking a 3-mile flat course without a pack. When you can cover the course in less than 45 minutes, add a pack with about 25 pounds. Increase the weight until you can hike 3 miles in 45 minutes while carrying 45 pounds. Also, hike hills with a pack to build leg strength and endurance.
