The court figures out each parent's income based on the information in your worksheets. It adds together the parents' incomes. Then it finds the support amount in the Schedule that applies to the number and ages of your children. This is the “basic support obligation.”

Not paying support can have serious consequences. This could mean jail time for that parent.

DCS has 10 years from the date your youngest child in the order turns 18 to collect unpaid support. What if DCS wants more time to collect support from me? They might ask you to sign a Waiver of Defense/Statute of Limitations form. This lets them collect unpaid support indefinitely.

The parent may be imprisoned until he or she agrees to comply with the order, but in no event for more than one hundred eighty days. (c) The noncomplying parent to pay, to the moving party, a civil penalty of not less than two hundred fifty dollars.

If the court finds that the parent is willingly refusing to make child support payments, they will be held in contempt of court until the arrearage is paid. This can include daily accruing fines on top of the support payments and even jail time.

In most cases in Washington, child support comes to an end when the child in question turns 18 years old or graduates from high school, whichever comes later. A number of circumstances do exist, however, where payments continue longer.

Washington has removed the age brackets and child support is now the same amount (for the basic support) regardless of the child's age. Now, parents with children younger than twelve years old, will be able to receive more support than before even if their divorce case was finalized before January 1, 2019.
