MAID allows an adult New Jersey resident, who has the capacity to make health care decisions and who has been determined by that individual's attending and consulting physicians to be terminally ill, to obtain medication that the patient may self-administer to end the patient's life.

The New Jersey Medical Aid in Dying for the Terminally Ill Act (P.L. 2019, c. 59) permits an attending physician to write a prescription for medication that would enable a qualified terminally ill patient to end his or her life. This Act was approved April 12, 2019 and went into effect August 1, 2019.

A: The Death with Dignity Act (DWDA) is a permissive law that allows terminally ill individuals to end their lives through the voluntary self-administration of a lethal dose of medication, expressly prescribed by a physician for that purpose.

New Jersey Death with Dignity is committed to educating and providing resources for all people, without regard to race; religion; gender, gender identity, or gender expression; sexual orientation; national origin; disability; age; socioeconomic status; educational background; or beliefs.

MAID allows an adult New Jersey resident, who has the capacity to make health care decisions and who has been determined by that individual's attending and consulting physicians to be terminally ill, to obtain medication that the patient may self-administer to end the patient's life.

Patients must meet stringent eligibility requirements, including being an adult, state resident, mentally capable, able to self-administer and ingest the medications, and having a terminal diagnosis with a prognosis of six months or less to live. There are no exceptions.

A terminal illness is an illness or condition which cannot be cured and is likely to lead to someone's death.
