Programs that provide EMS training at the basic level are sometimes known as Basic Life Support schools. Most Mississippi programs are offered through the state's community college system. Programs take approximately four months (or one semester) to complete.

Becoming a first responder in California requires a combination of education, training, and certification. The first step is to obtain a high school diploma or GED. After that, aspiring first responders must complete a state-approved emergency medical technician (EMT) training program.
