The Bureau of EMS certifies Emergency Medical Responders (EMR), Emergency Medical Technicians (EMT), Advanced EMTs (AEMT), EMS Drivers, and Paramedics in the state of Mississippi.

Programs that provide EMS training at the basic level are sometimes known as Basic Life Support schools. Most Mississippi programs are offered through the state's community college system. Programs take approximately four months (or one semester) to complete.

The Bachelor of Science in Emergency Medical Services degree program provides paramedics with the education necessary to practice at the highest level, becoming leaders in their field. This program is specifically designed to meet the unique educational needs of the practicing paramedic.

The NREMT requires 120-150 hours of training to become an EMT-Basic, which can take up to six months to complete. This is much shorter than the required 1,200-1,800 hours, often one two years of training, required to take the EMT-Paramedic certification exam.

A Mississippi paramedic student can expect, at minimum, 800 hours of didactic and laboratory instruction, 200 hours of clinical work, and 200 hours of fieldwork (http://msdh.ms.gov/msdhsite/_static/47,6496,307,368.html).

Becoming a first responder in California requires a combination of education, training, and certification. The first step is to obtain a high school diploma or GED. After that, aspiring first responders must complete a state-approved emergency medical technician (EMT) training program.

The curriculum of the Paramedic Program is for four semesters in length, and classes are admitted each fall semester requiring a minimum of 1,500 hours of classroom instruction, clinical, and field internship. EMT Program Application Forms: EMT Basic. EMT Paramedic.

Paramedic (PM) students complete a program between 1,200 to 1,800 hours and may last six to twelve months. Topics covered in paramedic courses include anatomy and physiology, cardiology, medications, and medical procedures.
