Varieties of beak shapes and sizes are an adaptation for the different types of foods that birds eat. In general, thick, strong conical beaks are great at breaking tough seeds, and are found on seed-eating birds such as cardinals, finches, and sparrows.

This practical activity explores beak adaptations in bird populations and looks at the way in which variation in beak shape is related to the available food sources within an environment. Students simulate bird feeding by using a 'beak' to collect food and place it into a stomach.

The object of this experiment is to see how many seeds you can crack open in 30 seconds. When you are ready have your assistant time you for 30 seconds using each tool or “beak”. After you have used each tool write down in your data table how many seeds you were able to crack and put in your “stomach”.

The beak, bill, or rostrum is an external anatomical structure found mostly in birds, but also in turtles, non-avian dinosaurs and a few mammals. A beak is used for eating, preening, manipulating objects, killing prey, fighting, probing for food, courtship, and feeding young.

Overgrown Beak: A very common problem, especially for the upper beak, overgrown beak can be a result of a few factors such as liver disease, nutritional problems, or simple abnormalities. To treat an overgrown beak you simply need to trim the excess beak.

A hawk's beak is razor sharp and can tear the flesh off the small animals it eats. A hummingbird's beak is long and thin, which helps it dip into the flowers to sip nectar (a sugary fluid the hummingbird uses for food).

Challenge Criteria: You will operate the beak with your hand, but no part of your hand should come in contact with the food. Also, the beak has to have a top and a bottom so it can open and close like a jaw. Other than that, get creative! You can take inspiration from nature or create something totally new.
