There are two divisions in meiosis; the first division is meiosis I: the number of cells is doubled but the number of chromosomes is not. This results in 1/2 as many chromosomes per cell. The second division is meiosis II: this division is like mitosis; the number of chromosomes does not get reduced.

Meiosis I is the initial round of cell division, during which homologous pairs are separated. The pairing of homologous chromosomes, crossing over, and genetic recombination that occurs during Meiosis I results in two daughter cells with half the number of chromosomes.

In this process, we begin with a cell with double the normal amount of DNA, and end up with 4 non-identical haploid daughter gametes after two divisions. There are six stages within each of the divisions, namely prophase, prometaphase, metaphase, anaphase, telophase and cytokinesis.
